Our true objective is to prevent war, The year just finished has been one of solid progress. A good beginning has been made. 1952 must be a year of even greater total accomplishment than was recorded in 1951. Yet even with the greatest efficiency and care, our resources will be seriously streighed and sacrifices must be made by everyone. No person or nation can depend complaisantly on the.... another. Collective security will be produced only throught energetic cooperationd amongst 30 self-confident nations, all bound together into a solid unit by a common devotion to freedom and peace. The peoples of the West have developed systems of free government through gerneration of work and suffering and sacrifice. They are now pledged, each to all the others, to preserve these free systems through a common strenght capable of confronting any wouldbe agressor with a hopeless task. Danger to us diminishes as we are grow stronger. Although we are a long way yet from attaining our goal, if our resolution and our patriotism are worthy of the history of free men, we can provide for ourselves, our chirldren and our grandchildren, security and peace. --------------- Il y a trois ans, a dit le général Eisenhower, que le pacte atlantique a été signé. L'objectif de nos gouvernements était simple : maintenir la paix par la sécurité collective. Maintenant que nous suivons le sentier qui mène à ce but, les progrès peuvent paraître désespérément lents Notre rapport ne sera donc ni tout à fait blanc ni tout à fait noir. Nous avons eu des découragements comme nous avons fait de grands pas en avant. Nous avons eu l'Indochine, la Corée, la Malaisie. Du côté encourageant, il y a une élévation révolutionnaire du moral de nos forces. Le général Eisenhower a conclu : Je vous assure que nous ne doutons pas que vous puissiez réaliser votre tâche. Il est bien sûr que vous le pouvez. C'est une simple affaire de confiance en soi. Le général Eisenhower a terminé son allocution en souhaitant la réussite de la sécurité collective, l'optimisme, la foi et finalement, a-t-il dit, la ténacité...la ténacité ! ------------- Ladies and gentlemen, this ceremony marks the official end of my tool of duty as supreme commander allied powers Europe. The acomplishment we seek is the right enability of free men to live only in peace and security with honor. We ask nothing else but we can't certainly be satisfied with nothing less. And now, general Ridgway, it in my proud duty to turn over to you, the finest headquarters unit I have ever seen. And along with it, the Command of subordined units that are as devoted, as capable as any that can be found in this all free world. Yours is now the responsability, the authority, my expressions of hope, of confidence in ... direction of this great affair and the task is now yours. My congratulations. |
